A Lucky Find in the Mountains of Huiyang

Here at Molaho, our garden sits peacefully in the mountains of Huiyang district, Huizhou. We’re surrounded by small farming villages where life moves at a gentle pace. The local farmers tend their terraced fields just as their ancestors did, and the mountain air carries the sweet smell of wild flowers and fresh soil.

One hot September afternoon, after working hard in our garden – pulling weeds, cleaning, building new features, and getting all sweaty and tired – our girls Mia and Milena couldn’t stop asking to go swimming. The Engineer, (who can find the most amazing hidden spots like a human GPS) suggested we take a break and head up the mountain where there are lots of natural pools and waterfalls.

We jumped on our tricycle and started climbing up the mountain paths. We passed some tourists enjoying the easy-to-reach swimming spots, but The Engineer had something more special in mind. He always knows where to find those untouched places that feel like our own private paradise.

That’s when we found it – a group of old, abandoned one-story houses. Nature was slowly taking over, with plants growing through the walls and wild vines covering what was left of the windows. Carefully, we went inside. What we found was amazing – it was an old decoration factory! Everything was left behind like people had just walked away one day.

Inside, we found all sorts of treasures:

Christmas decorations still shining under the dust
Halloween pumpkins and spooky decorations
Easter bunnies and colorful eggs
Beautiful fake flowers that looked almost real
Seasonal decorations for spring and autumn

The girls were so excited, pointing at everything they found. We made sure to check carefully for any animals (especially snakes!) before touching anything. Some items were very dusty, but others were still perfect in their original packaging.

We made sure every room was safe before we entered, then the girls, Marc and I carefully picked out the best treasures to decorate our cozy homestead. We felt like we were on a real adventure!

After our exciting discovery, we finally made it to our swimming spot – a beautiful clear water pool hidden in the mountain. We swam until it started getting late, promising ourselves we’d come back another day to explore the abandoned house some more.

This is what I love about living at Molaho – you never know what surprising discoveries you’ll make in these mountains. Every adventure brings something new!

Until next time!
